Challenge
An employee used their work laptop to visit a website infected with the Cryptolocker virus. Cryptolocker is a type of virus that extorts a ransom from its victims by infecting their computer and encrypting all files, making them unusable and unreadable. The people behind the virus then demand payment to restore access to the files.
Because the laptop was connected to the corporate network, the virus quickly spread to the file server through the employee’s shared resources. In just a few hours, all of the corporation’s files, including their financial documents, had been encrypted and were no longer accessible.

Solution
Responding to a viral infection such as Cryptolocker is a two-part process. First you need to identify, isolate and remove the infection, and second, recover the corrupted files to allow business operations to continue.
After detecting the outbreak, Horn IT quickly found the source of the infection. With the source identified, wiping and cleaning all infected hard drives to remove all traces of the virus is critical.
Luckily for the client, Horn IT already implemented a Datto backup system. This system ensures the availability of reliable, restorable and current backups of all of the corrupted files. All of the client’s files were restored to a point in time prior to the infection, including all important financial documents that might have been lost.

Results
Horn IT’s automated monitoring and quick response to the virus outbreak meant the client experienced only 2.5 hours total of downtime. They also recovered all of their files and continued to work as if the incident never occurred.
